Shooting with the Sony a7S II

I recently rented a Sony a7SII to test it out, and I have to say that I’m officially in love with this camera! The full frame imagery it produces is beautiful, and the built-in image stabilization means you can shoot stable handheld video with just about any lens, old or new. Here’s a video I made for Fotodiox, taking a closer look at the gear I used for my shoot.

And here are the two videos I captured with the camera. I shot both over one long weekend that included a trip to downtown Chicago and Door County, Wisconsin. I was originally going to edit them into one video, featuring my friend Mike and his photography as the unifying subject, but the two locations were so unique that they ended up working better as separate videos.

One of the problems I ran into with this setup was shooting in Sony’s S-Log2, which bands pretty badly when shooting internally due to the compression. If you looks closely at the corners of both videos, especially during shots of the sky, you’ll see what I mean. After some research, I found out that the best correction for this issue is shooting with the a7sII’s Gamma set to CINE4 and color mode to S-Gamut3.Cine.
